Tips for cleaning bathroom tiles
Lime, soap scum, mildew, mold, fungus or dirt concentrated in the tile joint are the enemies to be beaten in order to have a bright and immaculate bathroom.
To effectively clean bathroom tiles we can use specific cleaning products or we can use products that we usually have in the kitchen, such as vinegar, baking soda or oil. We can also use general pharmaceutical products such as hydrogen peroxide.
In this post, you will learn the most effective ways to clean bathroom tiles to make them shiny using products we usually have at home or that we can make ourselves by mixing two or three ingredients, easily and simply.
Ways to remove lime from tiles
Lime stains on bathroom tiles are very common. They are quite annoying, because they are often difficult to remove.
One of the most effective ways to remove limescale stains on these surfaces is to use water mixed with white vinegar. Once the solution has been prepared, soak a cloth in it and clean the tiles thoroughly. To finish, it is recommended to wipe with a damp cloth to remove any remains.
If there is a lot of limescale buildup, it is advisable to use hot vinegar. After thorough cleaning of the wall, rub the surface with a dry cloth. That makes the tiling shiny.
Another way is to mix the vinegar with liquid soap or dishwasher, in equal proportions. Shake or stir the mixture well and it is ready to use. The result is better if you rub it with a sponge. It is a good idea to leave the mixture on the tiles for a few minutes and then wipe it with a cloth soaked in water.
How To Clean Very Dirty Bathroom Tiles
When there are stains of lime and also of grease or other dirt on the tiles, ammonia is recommended. To do this, a container is prepared with water and a jet of ammonia is poured into it. The surface is then cleaned with this mixture and the help of a sponge or cloth. Finally, wipe with a cloth soaked in water to remove any ammonia residue and wipe dry with a cloth.
If ammonia is used, care should be taken, as it is a corrosive product. It is essential to wear gloves when handling it and to avoid splashing it on the skin and, especially, in the eyes.
It is also important to have the room ventilated. Above all, you should avoid breathing ammonia fumes.
Cleaning the tiles with alternative products
Incredibly, some products are well suited for cleaning tiled surfaces. Like this:
Applied with a cotton cloth, it leaves the tiles very shiny. But make sure that the rag does not release lint. You can also make a mixture with the following ingredients: alcohol and ammonia in equal parts, a jet of detergent and about half a liter of water.
Vapour-type appliances are very efficient at cleaning tiled surfaces. They also clean the joints very well, which is where the dirt resists most. When these are made of silicone, it is advisable to spray them briefly, so as not to damage the material. Finish by drying the surface with a cloth.
How to do a quick clean
If you want to know how to clean bathroom tiles quickly, one way to clean tiles is to rub them with alcohol, with the help of a cloth, right after the shower. The steam released by the hot water in the shower will have softened the dirt, which will be easily removed with the alcohol-impregnated cloth.
Eliminate mold and mildew stains
Mold stains are very unpleasant to the eye, as they blacken the whole and give the impression of dirt. The worst thing is that they are very persistent and are not usually well disposed of with conventional products purchased in shops.
However, there are some all-natural, proven remedies available.
You can use the following natural remedies to clean bathroom tiles with mildew or mold stains:
The best way to apply it is to dissolve it in water and apply it with a sprayer. Baking soda absorbs moisture and, with it, mold. It is convenient to rub with a small brush, which can be an old toothbrush, for example.
Vinegar for cleaning tiles has already been mentioned above. To act more effectively against fungi, it can be applied directly, without diluting. Wait a while for it to act, then rub it with a cloth.
Boric acid or borax
Due to its antifungal power, it is often used in deodorant powders for feet and shoes. In this case, it is best to use it dissolved in water, in the following proportion: half a glass of borax for half a litre of water. After applying the mixture, let it act and then rinse well with a cloth or sponge and water.
The best thing about hydrogen peroxide is that it kills mold without releasing toxic gases. It is only necessary to apply it on the areas that present these humidities and to let it act during 15 minutes, approximately. It can be spread with a cloth or, even more practical, by using a sprayer. Finally, rub it with a small brush.

Do's and Don'ts of Tile Cleaning
Always follow these recommendations when cleaning bathroom tiles:
- Before using a particular mixture or product, it is a good idea to ensure that the material to be cleaned is not damaged. For example, caution should be exercised with bleach or ammonia, as both can attack the material that supports the design. Caution: ammonia and bleach must never be mixed, as together they give off highly toxic vapours.
- Caution must be exercised when using corrosive products. They should be handled with gloves and should not splash the skin, especially the eyes. Also, keep the bathroom well ventilated.
- Avoid the use of tools that can scratch the surface. Therefore, do not use scraping or scratching objects, such as metal scourers (such as lullabies), punches, scissors, knives and the like.
- Avoid using overly abrasive products on all surfaces. It is advisable to test in a very limited area to check the result before applying them to the entire surface.
Cleaning other surfaces: porcelain stoneware floors
Porcelain stoneware flooring does not require very special care, it is sufficient to clean it periodically with water and detergent.
A first piece of advice when using porcelain flooring for the first time is to clean it well, avoiding the use of acid or abrasive products, especially if it has just been laid. On the other hand, it does admit abundant water, since porcelain stoneware is not very porous. This will remove the remains of the work.
Afterwards it can be cleaned with water and some product. It is worth asking the professional installers or the manufacturer what type of products are most recommended for this type of cleaning.
If there are stains or anything stuck to the flooring, it can be rubbed with a plastic brush or green pad.
With regard to the cleaner, it is advisable to use a pH neutral soap. Before scrubbing, remove surface dirt with a broom or vacuum cleaner. The mop can then be mopped, always squeezed well.
For the maintenance of the floors it is suitable to dry mop. This removes dust and footprints as well.
Plenty of water and a few soapy products will be enough to clean properly.
After installation, it is essential to clean it thoroughly. Then, after the time recommended by the installer for curing the joints has elapsed, the joints can be cleaned with a neutral product.
The dry mop is a great ally to polish the surface, always after convenient cleaning, following the instructions above: vacuum cleaner or broom, mop or wipe and finally the mop.
